Amish teen, child thrown from buggy during crash

APPANOOSE COUNTY, IOWA -- UPDATED:

We now have more information on the crash. The victims are identified as Laura Kurtz, 18, of Centerville. She was flown to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, where she is listed in critical, but stable, condition. Also injured was Christine Beachy, 10, of Centerville. She was taken to Wayne County Hospital for treatment.

Two people were hurt in a collision involving an Amish buggy and a tractor trailer Tuesday morning. The crash happened just before 8:30 a.m. in Appanoose County.

Appanoose County Sheriff Gary Anderson tells KTVO, the crash happened when the horse pulling the eastbound buggy unexpectedly pulled the buggy to the left and into the path of the westbound semi.
    
Both females, ages 18 and 10, riding in the buggy were ejected in the collision. The 18-year-old was transported by air ambulance to a Des Moines hospital. The 10-year-old was transported to Wayne County Hospital where she was treated.  Their names have not been released.  

The driver of the semi, Dennis Jackson of Centerville, Iowa,was not injured.

The investigation by the Appanoose County sheriff and the Iowa State Patrol is continuing.
