OTTUMWA, IOWA -- One local business stepped up Thursday and donated 50 fire extinguishers to the Ottumwa Fire Department.

ABS Fire Equipment of Ottumwa stopped by the Ottumwa Central Fire Station Thursday morning and donated the equipment, which will be given out to less fortunate families and persons who cannot afford them.

Members of the Ottumwa Fire Department say that his gift will go a long way for the community.

“It is a great, great addition to our program. You know, anytime quicker action is taken on a fire as it is in its early stage, to get the fire out, less work for the firefighters, but we want to have this program available for a quick response,” said Deputy Chief Cory Benge of the Ottumwa Fire Department.

“He’s (the owner of ABS Fire Equipment) donated these, we would like to see home have them and we are lucky we have a businessman here in town that was willing to donate these; he said it is for the community, so we want people that need to hem to take advantage of them,” said Assistant Chief Mike Craff.

If you are in need of a fire extinguisher or a smoke alarm, you can contact the Ottumwa Fire Department at 641-683-0666.

Benge and Craff say that the department will come to your home and install the equipment for you; and the department also offers demonstrations on how to use a fire extinguisher as well.
