Lt. Coronel Enrique Melendez tells KTVO that Sanborn has a spinal injury and is still in the Intensive Care Unit at University Hospital in Columbia. Melendez said Sanborn's condition is very delicate. He has had two surgeries, including one Monday that lasted for 12 hours. They are not sure what his outcome will be at this time.
Howard Sanborn is 30 years old. He has served two tours in Iraq and is team leader of the Golden Knights Black Team. He is originally from New Hampshire and is currently stationed near Fort Bragg.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol said the driver involved in the accident, Nathan Worstell, 24, of Macon, was cited for careless and imprudent driving. He allegedly told troopers he was adjusting his radio when his car swerved onto the shoulder and hit Sanborn. Sanborn then hit his teammate, Sergeant Jonathan Lopez, who was riding his bicycle with him.
