FAIRFIELD, IOWA -- Jefferson County and the city of Fairfield is one step closer to selecting a company to provide ambulance services to the area.

The current contract is up at the end of the month, and city officials hope to select a proposal and begin a new contract right away.

The Jefferson County Board of Supervisors have narrowed it down to two proposals. One is from the area's current provider, Jefferson County Area Ambulance. The other is from a company out of Urbandale, Iowa, Midwest Ambulance of Iowa. Both proposals are more than the current levy is bringing in, so there will be some kind of subsidization from a tax entity of some form, either from the city or county. But both options come with positives and negatives.

"It's kind of a catch 22, one will take $20,000 more than the current levy brings in," said Steve Burgmeier, Jefferson County Board of Supervisors chairman and county representative on the ambulance board. "The other will take about $45,000 more - the local one. Midwest will take about $20,000 more. But those are decisions that... hopefully the members of the ambulance board will get some input from the people on the city council, the people on the hospital board and make an educated decision on when the time comes next Monday."

Monday, September 10 is when the ambulance board will next meet. Burgmeier said he hopes a final decision will be made at that time, and the board can go forward with a new proposal in place.
