KIRKSVILLE, MO -- Gas prices have achieved another record across the country, the highest average ever on Labor Day. Thanks to Hurricane Isaac, a refinery fire in California, a pipeline leak in Wisconsin and refinery issues across the Great Lakes.
The previous record stood at $3.69 but this Labor Day’s price toppled that coming in at $3.80, up nearly five cents from just a week ago. Across Missouri prices have risen nine cents to $3.69 and Iowa is up eight cents to $3.75.
The good news is prices should start to come down over the coming weeks, slowly. With the summer traveling season unofficially over now and Isaac’s impact nearly behind us, oil should begin flowing at full capacity over the next few days. Combind that with cheaper winter blend gasoline’s being made heading into fall and that spells cheaper prices.
Of course this could all change if the gulf experiences another hurricane and with September being the peak in hurricane season, all eyes will be across the oceans.
