KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- There's somewhat of a building boom going on in Kirksville this year.

May and June were big months when it comes to the number of building permits issued for all kinds of new construction.

May and June were the two biggest months for the City of Kirksville in the past three-and-a-half years.

The permits were for all types of new construction, including homes, commercial, duplexes and storage buildings.

Codes and Planning Director Brad Selby said the city handed out 17 building permits in May and 10 in June.

"It seems like this spring a lot of stuff wanted to get started at once, and so we had a lot of activity, and we've still got a lot of activity," said Selby

Selby said the monthly number of building permits handed out for 2009, 2010 and 2011 were all in the single digits.

He attributes this year's boom to a couple of things: an improving economy and the up-and-coming new dental school A.T. Still University is building.

"The staff, the faculty, the people (who are) going to work there, it's going to take a lot of people, plus the students, and I believe our developers in this area are looking to make sure we have rental housing available,” said Selby.

Selby said construction is a plus for the city in a number of ways.

It's good for the economy, it's good for the businesses that sell building supplies, it provides jobs for construction workers and it brings in additional property tax revenue, just to name a few.
