KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- Kirksville police announced Tuesday that the house fire was a result of negligent burning by a juvenile, who had been burning cotton swabs in a bedroom of the home.

The bedroom where the fire started is considered a total loss.

Everyone in the home at the time of the fire made it out safely.

The Kirksville Police Department along with the Kirksville Fire Department responded to a house fire early Monday morning.

The call came out around 9 a.m. at the home located near the 2200 block of west Gardner in Kirksville. According to police, one of the occupants inside the home made the call to dispatch.

When crews arrived, smoke and flames could be seen shooting from the home. Luckily, everyone inside the home made it out safely, and fire crews were able to contain the fire before it spread.

“There is quite a bit of smoke damage, the bedroom where it started is pretty much a total loss,” said Matt Kellison and arson/fire investigator with the Kirksville Police Department.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
