OTTUMWA, IOWA -- The State of Washington is on the cutting edge of technology when it comes to voter registration.

Several media outlets have reported that the state, along with Facebook and the Rock the Vote organization, have come together to help register voters via the social networking site.

Could Iowa adopt this policy soon? Officials KTVO spoke with on Friday do not think so; however, some are open to the idea.

“I looked at other states, I know you spoke about Washington State and Facebook, and being able to register through the site; but I looked at the law, it is 30 days before the election that they have to be registered to vote. So I think that we (Iowa) has an advantage there. At least the new voters do. I am willing to work with anybody on any ideas about voter registration at this time. We don’t even have online voter registration, there are some states that have that,” said State Representative Mary Gaskill.

The former county auditor says that if they were to move the registration process to an online program, she would be concerned most about security.

Current Wapello County Auditor Kelly Spurgeon told KTVO that she has not heard of Iowa moving to an online format for registering voters, but she added that Iowans to have an advantage to registering.

“You can register all the way clear up to Election Day, and you can also register on Election Day,” Spurgeon said.

Spurgeon says that the number of registered voters have remained steady since she has taken office, but admits that they can fluctuate.
