NEAR KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- It’s vivid proof of just how dangerously dry it is out there.

Firefighters were on the scene of a natural cover fire just south of Kirksville Thursday afternoon.

It was reported around 4:15 p.m.

It burned on property along First Trail just south off of Shepherd Avenue on the south edge of Kirksville.

Firefighters were working to prevent the fire from spreading to a small barn owned by Dr. Steve Barber of Kirksville.

The blaze appears to have started in a hayfield owned by Bob and Renetta Rockhold of Kirksville and then moved into timber on the south side of that field.

At last check, it has charred several acres of the Rockholds’ property and sent a lot of large hay bales up in flames.

Crews on the scene were calling for all of the help they could get from surrounding fire departments.

At this time, the cause of this fire is unknown.

Firefighters' main concern was getting it put out.
