DES MOINES, IOWA -- An Iowa State Corrections worker is contesting his firing for using excessive force. The worker was shown in a prison video kicking an inmate.

In the video obtained by The Des Moines Register, Michael Scott, of Montrose, Iowa, is shown taking an inmate to his cell at the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison, backing up a step and then kicking the prisoner. The video is dated November 9.

In December, Scott was terminated.

The Register reported on Wednesday that the incident came to light following an assault of a prison guard last week.

Debates have been ongoing between union representatives and state officials over staffing levels in Iowa prisons.

Michael Scott declined to comment on the incident on Wednesday, but says the state workers union is contesting his firing.
