MILAN, MO -- The Sullivan County Fair ended with 4-H and FFA kids being put to the test to see if they truly have what it takes to become a farmer.
The youth competed in the super farmer competition, at 3 p.m. Saturday. The competition involved an obstacle course full of a farmer's daily tasks including finding the hen's eggs, carrying buckets of water and feed, moving makeshift hay bales, and closing the gate. The team of two with the fastest time won a cash prize.
Organizers said the fair has had a good turnout this year despite Mercer and Linn counties hosting their fairs the same week.
"I guess there was a little challenge in having several other fairs in adjoining counties in our area but lots of kids did the marathon and made it to two or three county fairs," said Justin Oaks, Sullivan County Fair Board President.
"A lot of our loyal participants that we expect to be here every year were here so our numbers stayed up where we wanted them to be for the events and we had a good turnout of people to spectate, watch, and enjoy the kids showcasing their accomplishments."
Oaks said they will begin to plan for 2013's fair in late fall. He said they are always looking for more volunteers to join the fair board. If you are interested, you can reach Oaks at (660) 794-6187.
