OTTUMWA, IOWA -- As the 4th of July holiday approaches, Iowans should be aware that although fireworks are available across the state line in Missouri, they are illegal in Iowa.
The only types of fireworks allowed in the state are sparklers, snakes and toy caps.
In the city of Ottumwa, even possession of fireworks will earn you a ticket or citation.
"Consumer-grade fireworks generally have been illegal in Iowa since the 1930's, and that includes the use or sale of those fireworks," said Tom Rodgers, Ottumwa Public Information Officer. "Within the city of Ottumwa, it's more restrictive yet, and we include even possession of those fireworks, because state law makes it pretty clear you're not supposed to be using them, so that just tightens it up a little bit within the city limits here in Ottumwa."
Rodgers said if the city receives any complaints from neighbors about fireworks being used inside city limits, law enforcement will respond and citations will be written.
