KIRKSVILLE, MO -- For Monday's Facebook story of the day our fans wanted to know, how long is a bottle of water safe to drink, once the seal is broken?
Well, according to the Food and Drug Administration once the seal is broken, the safety is always in question because it could become contaminated.
A professor at A.T. Still University says, the safety of the water depends on what type of conditions you keep the bottle in after the seal is broken.
"If they break the seal remove the top then leave it open for a period of time, then the safety is more in question," says Dr. Neal Chamberlain. "If they break the seal, and keep the cap on tight, then it’s less likely that it will be contaminated with something."
Chamberlain added, if the seal is intact, water has an indefinite shelf life.
However, the quality of the water, such as the taste and smell, may be compromised the longer you wait to drink it.
