OTTUMWA, IOWA -- For Monday’s “Facebook Story of the Day” Facebook users wanted to know the policy for city-owned vehicles.

From time to time it seems city vehicles are on the roads for non-emergency situations. However, there is always a purpose.

The city keeps close supervision on when and where their vehicles are being driven.

“If somebody is riding around, and riding around and riding around we need to know about it.  We don't tolerate that - once you know - if somebody's trying to do something that's unethical or improper, we want to know about it,” said Joe Helfenberger, Ottumwa City Administrator.

You may also see fire trucks driving around the city that don’t seem to be on their way to a fire and wonder why they are on the streets. Helfenberger said they use the trucks to go to fire inspections and arson investigations.

Additionally, the fire department also has to conduct commercial investigations so many times a year; they might take a fire truck depending on the staffing issues.
