OTTUMWA, IOWA -- Here is the latest storm clean-up update from the City of Ottumwa. KTVO will continue its coverage of the aftermath of Saturday evening's destructive storm tonight at five, six, six-thirty and 10.
Storm Recovery Update
10:40 AM – Tuesday, June 19, 2012
An estimated 300 to 400 homes in Ottumwa remain without power today because of damage to their electrical service. If the electric meter box, the weatherhead, pole attached to the house or wiring attached to the house are pulled loose or damaged, it is the property owners responsibility to have that repaired before Alliant Energy can re-connect power to the house. Repairing the electrical service into a residence or building is not a “do-it-yourself” project and must be done by a licensed electrician. Always make sure electricians are fully insured and licensed. Once any repair work to the electric service is complete, customers should call Alliant Energy at 1-800-ALLIANT (800-255-4268) to have power restored.
City Public Works crews continue the work of clearing storm debris all over Ottumwa. Their immediate priorities are clearing hanging branches in the right of way, clearing streets and removing debris from storm sewer catch basins. City crews are coordinating closely with Alliant Energy; as the electric company clears branches from power lines, city crews try to clear the right of way as soon as possible. City Park Department crews are focusing on the clean up of various public properties and parks. The campground at Ottumwa has been cleared and is open for business.
The City’s tree limb disposal site at 550 Gateway Drive (the former Alliant Energy Shop) is open 6 AM to 8 PM each day this week, including Saturday and Sunday, June 23 and 24. The site intended for storm related tree debris branches from residential users. Contractors and commercial haulers must dispose of limbs at the Ottumwa/Wapello Landfill. The Landfill is open 7:00AM to 4:00PM, Monday through Friday, and 7:00AM to Noon on Saturdays. All tree debris loads being transported through town must be tied securely or covered to prevent dumping the debris on the street.
