KIRKSVILLE, MO -- Having a pet that is roaming around inside your vehicle or sitting on your lap can be a huge distraction. But is it illegal? That is what many of you wanted to know about for Monday’s Facebook Story of the day.

“In the state of Missouri, it is not illegal to have a pet riding in your vehicle whether it is inside the cabin area of the vehicle or in the bed of the pick up truck. However, it is an unsafe driving practice. Distractive driving is one of the leading causes of traffic crashes,” said Sgt. Brent Bernhardt with the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

When traveling with animals, it is recommended you put them in a kennel or crate to not only keep the animal safe, but to keep the driver undistracted.
