KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- Kirksville High School celebrates its 118th graduating class. The high school's commencement was held Sunday afternoon in the Pershing Arena on the Truman State University campus. With temperatures reaching near 90 degrees, nearly everyone inside turned their programs into fans, as they cheered for the loved ones who have reached a major milestone in life.

"I'm extremely excited right now," said Kaine Michael Slaughter, a member of the National Technical Honor Society. "Even though I might miss high school, at the same time, I'm glad that I'm done with high school finally."

According to Principal Randy Mikel, 168 students graduated. The Class of 2012 Valedictorian is Lena Jia, followed by Salutatorian Florence Emily Pollard. Third in the class is Chelsie Todd, followed by Callie Templeton. Leading the class to graduation is Morgan Carnes, the Class President.

"High school certainly has been a ride. I'm glad it's over but it's been a wonderful journey," said Lena Jia. Jia has 4.396 G.P.A. and is headed to Emory University in the fall. The only class she remembers receiving a B in is Physical Education. She said it's because she is not a good athlete.

Many of the graduates said it's been a long road to graduation, but they plan to continue their education in the future.

"It was kind of hard. It took a lot of work and dedication," said Rachel Smith.

Mikel said he couldn't be more proud of this class and their accomplishments.

"This group, we had a National Merit Scholar Winner, two state wrestling championships, individual accolades along the way...choir, music," said Mikel. "It's just a rounded class. They're great kids and they're going to do well in their life after high school."
