OTTUMWA, IOWA -- The Ottumwa Christian School held its high school graduation on Saturday. However, it wasn’t a typical graduation ceremony.
Saturday the spotlight was on one graduating senior, Andy Bennett. He was the only one in his graduating class.
For a graduation ceremony of one student, more than 30 friends and family members attended to help celebrate Andy’s accomplishments.
I feel really old, like really old -- like up until now I felt like I was like 13. I don't know if that's weird,” said Bennett.
Bennett is the youngest of four siblings. The age difference between him and his next sibling is 16 years making this made the day even more special for his parents.
“When people ask us ‘was he a surprise’ we always say ‘no, he was a blessing’ because we weren't expecting him but there's a difference between a surprise and a gift. And he's just always been very special to all of us,” said Bennett’s mother.
“My brother Paul is 16 years older than me and then everyone else is older – don’t know how much -- but yea he was 16 when I was born. So I was pretty much raised like an only child. It was pretty cool. It was like having a lot of uncles but they were my brothers and sisters -- or uncles and aunts I guess,” said Bennett.
Bennett is planning to go to college in one year. He isn’t exactly sure where he’s going to attend yet but for now he just wants to enjoy his summer.
“I’m going to try to start a band with my friends, just hang out, maybe get a job. I don’t know; it all depends,” said Bennett.
