BLOOMFIELD, IOWA -- Thanks to the help of teachers and community, a Davis County High School student with a passion for art will be able to attend an out-of-state art seminar this summer.

The University of South Dakota offers a week-long summer art institute, where students can take their pick of classes in different types off art.

Davis County High School sophomore Jerica McAdam was nominated by her teacher, Lory Chaplin, and to apply for the program, she had to send ten samples of her art and write a paragraph about what she would like to do in the future. And she knows that art is what she loves the most.

"Art is my passion, it's my favorite thing to do," McAdam said. "I have 18 acres and I like to walk through it and sometimes I see stuff, I take pictures and then I draw that."

The program carries a price tag of $650 and when McAdam was accepted, Chaplin rallied her fellow educators and community members to help raise funds. They have now raised enough money not only for the program's fee, but to get her there as well.

"I'd like to thank everyone who donated to me. Because if they didn't, I wouldn't have been able to go," McAdam said. "And especially to Mrs.. Chaplin, because this wouldn't have been possible without her."

McAdam said she has been working on painting and pastels more this year, but her favorite type of art is pencil drawings. She draws inspiration from nature and animals and said she has already decided which classes she'd like to take this summer.
