MACON, MO --
Captain James E. Wilt, commanding officer of Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop B, in Macon, announces the results of "Operation S.T.O.P." enforcement activities conducted during the month of April 2012.
Operation S.T.O.P. (Stop, Think, Observe, and Proceed) is a new traffic enforcement program aimed at reducing traffic crashes at intersections having a higher rate of traffic crashes. At many of these intersections, serious crashes have occurred as a result of motorists failing to stop at stop signs or failing to yield to other vehicles as they enter the intersecting roadway.
On April 3, 2012, Operation S.T.O.P. was conducted in Macon County on U.S. Highway 36 at Kellogg Street, and in Adair County on U.S. Highway 63 at Missouri Highway 11. On April 11, 2012, Operation S.T.O.P. occurred in Macon County on U.S. Highway 36 at Kellogg Street; and on April 12, 2012, in Marion County on U.S. Highway 61 at the intersections of Main Cross Street and Ross Street, in Palmyra, Missouri. Operation S.T.O.P. also occurred on April 18, 2012, in Macon County on U.S. Highway 63 at Missouri Route M.
As a result of the operations, troopers assisted by a Patrol aircraft issued a total of 62 traffic summonses and 26 traffic warnings. The following is a breakdown of summonses issued for the month of April 2012:
51 - Citations for stop sign violations
7 - Citations for seat belt violations
3 - Citations for insurance violations
1 - Citation for exceeding the posted speed limit
"Fatalities are on the increase so far this year in Missouri," stated Captain Wilt. "The S.T.O.P. enforcement program is another innovative way of stepping up enforcement efforts to help reduce traffic crashes. Please follow all traffic laws, stop at all stop signs, and make sure it is safe to proceed through the intersection before doing so."
