KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- Girls Scouts in Northeast Missouri are collecting personal care products for those in need as apart of their April Showers Project.

10 Girl Scout Troops collected the items Saturday at the Wal-Mart in Kirksville. In all, they said they have collected more 3,000 items  ranging from shampoo, toilet paper, to baby care products.

The items will be donated to local food pantries, Lifeline Pregnancy, Victim Support Services, the Genesis House, the Salvation Army, and the Christian Community Food Depot.

"There's a lot of people in need the way the economy is, and people that get food stamp assistance are not able to use those for personal care products, and only about 2 percent of donations to food pantries are personnel care products," said Kelly Freeland, the District Chair for the April Showers Project.  "So, that's why we like to do this yearly to bring that out to the public's attention."

"I think it feels good to help people in need," said Mackenzie Naste, a member of Brownie Troop #9164.

"We're helping people take care of themselves," said Lillian Miller, a member of Brownie Troop # 9164.

The Girl Scouts are also going to door-to-door, dropping off bags for donations. If you missed them on Saturday, they'll be collecting the items at the Christian Community Food Depot April 28, from 10 a.m until 2 p.m.
