KIRKSVILLE, MO -- Does the toothpaste section at your local store seem like a never ending aisle?
With what seems like hundreds of different types of toothpaste out there, does it really make a difference in which one you buy.
“The most important factors in determining what toothpaste you use are whether or not it has the seal of acceptance from the American Dental Association. That’s easy to find right of the box or tube of toothpaste,” said Dr. Tisha Kice-Briggs from Kirksville Dental Group.
While almost every toothpaste has the seal of acceptance, not every type is suitable for everyone. There is toothpaste available for whitening, sensitivity, and that include fluoride.
“If you have certain tooth problems like extreme sensitivity to cold you definitely want to avoid the whitening toothpaste. It is hard to not find whitening toothpaste at the store. But whitening toothpaste tends to make your teeth a lot more sensitive. There are also certain types of toothpaste geared towards sensitivity,” Kice-Briggs said.
While most brands contain fluoride, it is important to make sure your favorite brand does. Fluoride is a key component in cavity prevention.
If over the counter toothpaste does not work for you, contact your dentist to see if you need prescription toothpaste.
