EDINA,MO -- Residents of Edina are being asked to vote on a special bond issue in Tuesday's elections.
On the ballot, city officials are asking voters to pass a $4 million revenue bond to help make renovations to the sewage and water system.
Mayor David Strickler says the city's clay pipes are 60 years old and are cracked or broken and need to be repaired.
The manholes and sewage plant are about 40 years old and need an upgrade.
Strickler says the renovations are long overdue.
"Our sewage system is old and is in disrepair. It needs to be fixed. Rather than slapping band-aids every year, we should go ahead and fix the whole thing," Strickler said.
If the bond issue fails and the renovations are not done soon, federal and state governments will take the matter into their own hands, and that will cost the city even more money to make the repairs.
"If we keep ignoring this problem long enough, the state and federal people will come in, and they'll be ones driving the car. They'll be telling us what to do, and that's not a good idea." Strickler said. "You should fix stuff when it's worn out. You shouldn't wait till someone comes in and tell you to do what's right."
The renovations could begin as early as this summer.
