NOVINGER, MO. -- A local school district wants to make improvements to its buildings, and it is asking voters to pass a $1.1 million bond issue to pay for the upgrades.
Residents in Novinger’s Adair County R-1 School District will be voting on Proposition 2 on Tuesday, April 3.
Superintendent Bill Lake says Prop 2 is a no-tax-increase bond issue.
"I know these people love their school, and I think most of them realize it's time to do something,” said Lake. “Right now, the interest (rates) are just about as low as they're going to be. We can do it without raising taxes."
The money would be used for three main things: to make electrical upgrades; to put a new roof on the entire building except the gym; and to buy a new heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system.
The current HVAC system is almost 60 years old, and Lake says it's very inefficient and costly to operate.
Lake told KTVO he is cautiously optimistic that Proposition 2 will pass.
"These people have a lot of pride, and it's fun to watch as a guy (who's) been around a few years to see the pride they have, said Lake. “It's hard for me to imagine them not voting for it, but you always have an element that resists change."
Voters go to the polls next Tuesday to decide the bond issue.
