WEST DES MOINES, IOWA -- Hy-Vee grocery stores announced Wednesday that they will start offering for sale ground beef with or without the ingredient known as pink slime.
Hy-Vee spokeswoman Ruth Comer said Wednesday that they heard some customers were unhappy with the grocery chain's decision last week to stop offering beef at its stores known as lean finely textured beef. It is made from bits of leftover meat.
Federal regulators say the product meets food safety standards. Critics say it is an unappetizing example of industrialized food production.
Hy-Vee is based in West Des Moines and operates more than 235 retail stores across eight Midwestern states.
