WAPELLO COUNTY, IOWA -- With the unusually mild winter the Heartland has experienced this year, many have been concerned with the lack of precipitation. One group of people not concerned, farmers.
In Wapello County, and throughout southeast Iowa, farmers are starting to gear-up for planting season. In the coming weeks, fields all across the region will be full of tractors as farmers get their seeds planted.
Clark Yeager, a farmer in Wapello County told KTVO Wednesday that he is ready to go.
“We will probably be planting in at least two weeks. The ground is in almost perfect shape. We took some soil samples last night, and you could put a probe down without any effort,” said Yeager.
With the mild winter, many thought the lack of snow and rainfall would hurt farmers, but Yeager says that the moisture in the soil is just right.
“Evidently we have had a little more moisture than I thought. I have got some tile that are running, and that is an indication with how much water is in the soil. The mild winter has caused the weeds to grow fast, and so we are doing tillage now to knock down the weeds,” said Yeager.
Yeager will once again be growing corn in his fields throughout Wapello County.
