EDINA, MO -- The Knox County School District is hoping a bond issue gets the ok from voters.

Back in 2007, Knox County residents voted on a 20-cent tax levy that goes toward debt service for the school district.

During next week's elections, the school district is putting the bond issue on the ballot that essentially continues the levy at the current rate.

School officials says this will help with the extensive repairs the school needs since it will be 50 years old next year.

"We've got a lot of issues," said Knox County School District Superintendent Andy Turgeon. "For example, the sidewalks are 50 years old and they're cracking. It presents safety issues such as driving and the loading then unloading of kids on school buses and cars. We want to improve the safety here in the school district."

Turgeon also says the improvements will bring a safer and better learning environment for students.

"There have been studies that the school education for kids is much better and if they are in the right environment such as better lighting and air flow. That is what we take into consideration. We have to provide the best atmosphere for our students to do their best. Our goal is to do what's best for the students," Turgeon said.

The money will be used to repair cracks in the ceilings, sidewalks, and walls. New electrical wiring, air conditioning, water faucets, and energy efficient lighting will also be added.

The Knox County elections are Tuesday, April 3.
