OTTUMWA, IOWA -- Over 2,000 trout will be dumped into the pond in Greater Ottumwa Park for the second annual Trout Derby this Saturday.

The Iowa DNR will put 1,000 rainbow trout and 1,000 brook trout into the pond for catching. Some of the fish will be tagged, and anyone who catches a tagged trout will be given a prize.

There will also be a trophy given for the biggest trout caught -- last year's biggest fish was around eight pounds -- and you do not have to be an experienced fisher to participate.

"Last year the fishing derby was won by a ten year old girl with a snoopy pole, so anything can happen, but 2000 trout's a lot of fish and last year, people were catching two to three fish each day," said Gene Rathje, Ottumwa Parks Director.

There is no registration required for the event, but participants must have a fishing license and a trout stamp. Fishers under the age of 16 must be supervised by a licensed adult.

Last year over 300 people participated, and Rathje hopes that the turnout this year will be even better.

The event is being held from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday.
