OTTUMWA, IOWA -- For almost four terms, Wapello County Sheriff Don Kirkendall has been at the helm of one of the largest law enforcement agencies in southeast Iowa; and just recently, he announced that he will not seek re-election.
"If people remember anything about the time I have spent with Wapello County, it's, I always strive to do a good job; and that has been the focus of my career," said Kirkendall.
A career that has lasted more than 30 years, Kirkendall has put some major accomplishments under his belt. From helping getting the Wapello County Law Center built, to improving the working relationship with the Ottumwa Police Department; Sheriff Kirkendall has always been about moving the sheriff's office forward.
"I want to see it continue in the direction it has been going for many, many years; and that is forward. And, over the years, we have tried to work to become a pro-active department, versus a re-active department," said Kirkendall.
And even though the sheriff is moving on at the end of his term, he says that he will miss every moment of his job.
"I've thought about it, thought about it, and I think it's the best thing for me at this point. And am I going to miss it? You are darn right," stated Kirkendall.
Chief Deputy Mark Miller is expected to run for Sheriff Kirkendall's seat, and the sheriff says that he is 100% behind him.
"The chief deputy has announced his plans to run, and I am 100% behind him. He is a a very knowledgeable law enforcement officer, a very good leader and he believes and adheres to a lot of the principles that I have my entire career. And, I believe that and I think he will do an excellent job for the citizens and that is what is all about," said Kirkendall.
