ALBIA, IOWA -- No one was hurt when part of a building on the Albia town square collapsed.

Police Chief Jay Andrews says part of the roof and a wall of the historic building gave way at 8:15 a.m. Thursday. He says no one was in the building at the time.

The two-story building was built in 1875.

Andrews says the section of the building that collapsed was vacant. The other side houses the Albia Industrial Development Corporation.

Andrews says there were no warning signs of the collapse. He says a structural engineer will survey the damage and determine if the building can be saved.

Andrews doesn't know the original purpose of the building, saying it housed several different businesses over the years.

The Associated Press contributed to this story.
