KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- Repairs to the North Park Complex in Kirksville are almost complete.

There was extensive damage left behind at the ballfields, after the wind storm on June 27, 2011.

Now, three of the ballfields have new backdrops and the others are getting repairs. For the past two months, Phelps Fence Co. has been working on the project.

"The previous backdrops were chain-linked fences. We made a decision to eliminate the chain-link fence and to use a net which is easier for the spectators to watch the game," said Kirksville City Manager Mari Macomber.

"We went ahead and updated it to a new nylon style backdrop that is more visually pleasing and you can see through it easier and it's just a little safer. The balls don't bounce off of it as hard. It's just safer for everyone," said Luke Phelps, of Phelps Fence Co.

Macomber said the repairs will be complete before baseball and softball season. The city also installed new bleachers at the ballfields.

Macomber said the backdrops and repairs were funded mostly by insurance money.
