United Way is more than just fundraising

OTTUMWA, IA -- This past Friday, The Wapello County United Way held their annual celebration at the Hotel Ottumwa, announcing their grant awards and installing their new board of directors.

The Community Impact Organization Progam of the Year Award was given out to Iowa Legal Aid for their dedication and service to the community.

“One of the campaigns had a 385% of increase over their previous year and we recognized different campaign companies for those particular awards that night,” said United Way Executive Director Desiree Johnson.

The United Way raised over $568,000 in 2011, which was less than the previous year. Their goal for 2012 is $625,000.

Johnson said, “The United Way isn’t just about fundraising.”

In 2011, the Wapello County United Way became a volunteer center.  The goal is to actively engage more volunteers in the community.
