DES MOINES, IOWA -- An Iowa legislative panel has approved a measure that could make red light cameras in the state a thing of the past.
On Wednesday, a House transportation subcommittee moved the bill forward to the full House Transportation Committee. Representative Walt Rogers thinks the bill has a chance of being approved this year.
Rogers is a Cedar Falls Republican and is overseeing the legislation.
Law enforcement and city officials gave testimony to the committee supporting the use of red light and speed cameras. They told lawmakers that data indicates the cameras work to reduce the number of crashes and calm traffic.
Representative Rogers and others have questioned the effectiveness of the cameras and say they may violate civil liberties.
