OTTUMWA, IOWA -- With Facebook, texting and technology, the face of bullying in schools in constantly changing.
But one local performer aims to be the rather colorful face of anti-bullying to Ottumwa's students.
Desirae Payne has been giving presentations as Dizzy the Clown at elementary and middle schools for years. Last October, "Dizzy" began working on an anti-bullying show called S.K.A.T.E.
"I had a lot of requests from principals asking about character shows, anti-bullying schos, so it took me about a year to put the show together and I'm pretty happy with it," Payne said.
S.K.A.T.E stands for: S: Say No to Being a Bully, K: Keep Your Cool, A: Ask for Help, T: Tell Someone and E: Encourage Others. The 50-minute program combines allusions, story telling and audience participation to let kids know they have a choice when it comes to bullying.
"It's an awesome show... and all the principals are getting really excited about it," Payne said. "The whole idea is to teach kids how to say no to being a bully, and that they make choices every day, and they should make a choice to say no to being a bully."
Dizzy gave her program to several Ottumwa elementary and middle schools over the last few months. You can check out her program at NoBullyinMySchool.com
