DES MOINES, IOWA -- Iowa’s 2011 corn harvest is 9 percent higher than the 2010 crop. U.S. Department of Agriculture officials say the harvest for grain production hit 2.36 million bushels.
According to 2011 year end surveys, the average corn yield was 172 bushels an acre. That is up 7 from 2010.
In 2011, corn planted for all purposes was 14.1 million acres in Iowa, 5 percent more than 2010.
Soybean production dropped to 466 million bushels in 2011. That is 6 percent below 2010 harvest numbers. Soybean yields averaged 50.5 bushels an acre and that is a half bushel under the 2010 harvest.
The USDA says 9.23 million acres of soybeans were harvested. That is down 5 percent from 2010.
