KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- Many of you have voiced your concerns about how narrow and dangerous Route P is from Baltimore Street to the new alternate route in Kirksville, and MoDOT listened.

Maintenance crews were out Thursday morning adding material to both sides of the highway around the curves.

“We call it a cold mix. It’s a mixture of rock and asphalt so it should stay in place a lot better than just plain gravel,” said MoDOT’s Assistant District Engineer, Kevin James. “That will be in place out there so if the vehicle's tires off tracks or leaves the pavement it will give them more structure and they won't be in the dirt or grass.”

The “widening” of Route P may spill into Friday. If that’s the case there will be a work zone area out there with one lane closed while workers complete the project.

So what is MoDOT’s plan when it comes to a more permanent way of widening Route P?

“As of right now that’s not a project currently on our list of priorities, but we need to look at that as a priority and compare it to our other needs as we look at our future projects,” said James.
