LABELLE, MO -- This week's Ag Kid is 17-year-old Landon Henderson of Labelle. He was raised on his family's farm and is a fifth generation farmer. He works with cattle and pigs, but his passion is horses. “My dad used to train horses. I was always around him when he was doing that. It looked exciting to me so I wanted to do it. I started training ponies since I was young. It’s what I live for.”
Landon has shown his horses at fairs all across Missouri since he was 2 years old. He has received numerous awards and much recognition for his hard work. “I get up every morning before school and take care of my horses, feeding them and giving them water. Then I usually have two or three horses that I spend an hour on each of them riding and training.”
Landon’s experiences with his horses have brought a lot of funny and proud moments. “I was in a showmanship class and I was the only guy in the class. I ended up beating all the girls which is very hard to do in a showmanship class full of girls and a girl judge.”
Landon says agriculture is in his blood and is always going to be a part of him. “It has just been a part of my life since I was born. I never have known anything different besides horses and farming. It’s a way of life for my family and it’s what we do. That’s what I’ll continue to do.”
When not working with his horses, Landon likes to go hunting and play basketball. He hopes to go to college and become a veterinarian dentist.
Congratulations Landon on being this week’s Ag Kid.
