FORT MADISON, IOWA -- The Lee County Board of Supervisors will not be saying the Pledge of Allegiance when opening their meetings, at least for now.
According to the Associated Press and the Fort Madison Daily Democrat, Supervisor and Chairman Ernie Schiller stated that a resident of the county asked the board to recite the pledge.
Supervisor Schiller said that he does not want to seem un-patriotic; but if the board was to approve of saying the pledge, other residents could come forward requesting a prayer to be said or a reading from the Quran prior to the supervisors' meetings.
Schiller believes that saying no to the request(s) will open the county up to lawsuits.
The supervisors involved with the issue have agreed to talk with the county attorney about the issue.
