NOVINGER, MO. -- Meet 16-year-old Joel Sevits of Novinger. He has been involved with turf grass and landscaping management for the past three years. Joel was raised on his parents’ farm helping out with cattle and crops but it was his older brother who introduced him to mowing yards.
“I just kind of went with him and helped him out a bit. I realized there is money that can be made and that I can do a few things a little different and in a larger scale. So I bought a truck, a mower, and a weed eater. Then I got started.”
Joel is very active with the Adair County R-1 FFA. Outside of school, Joel is the co-owner of S&R Lawn Care business; he says the most important part of it is his customers.
“People can depend on us. We stay in touch with our people. We deal with our customers in a responsible manner. People can trust us and we trust them.”
Joel has tons of fun with his business partner Kolten. They have shared some pretty funny moments.
“I was mowing and got too close to a creek that flooded out into the grass. I got my lawn mower buried and so I called Kolten to help pull me out. He came down there and hooked his mower with mine. He took off and ended up getting his mower buried as well.”
Joel wants to continue in the landscaping business and hopes to go to college to get an education.
“I want to go to college but not do a four year. I just want to get in and get out so I can go back to my business, start working, and start making money.”
Other than working hard in his lawn and landscaping business, Joel also cuts and sells wood. He also loves to hunt, especially during deer season
Congratulations Joel on being this week’s Ag Kid.
