OTTUMWA -- For the Facebook story of the day our fans wanted to know what steps they can take to prepare for winter conditions especially when it comes to their vehicles.
We spoke with law enforcement officials in Wapello County on Thursday. You want to make sure you have an ice scrapper and plenty of windshield washer fluid. Flares can also help other vehicles detect you if you've gone in a ditch.
Wapello County Chief Deputy Mark Miller says modern technology is very helpful.
“Well it's nice to have extra material to keep you warm like a blanket, should you go off the road and become stuck before help can get to you,” Miller said. “In this day and age, with cell phones, it's very important to have a properly charged cell phone with you so you can summon help if you need it by dialing 911."
Miller says you should take extra time when traveling during the winter months. Also, keeping plenty of distance between yourself and the car ahead of you is very important on icy roads.
