JEFFERSON CITY, MISSOURI (AP) -- Thousands of people with developmental disabilities could stand to benefit if Missouri lawmakers can settle their differences and pass a bill creating new business incentives during a special legislative session.
Tucked into the massive bill is a little-publicized section creating a tax break for donors to organizations that have state contracts to serve the developmentally disabled.
The proposal would provide a tax credit equal to half of the dollar-amount of a donation. The organization receiving the donation then would have to pay the state an amount equal to the tax credit. The bottom line is the state would not be out any money, but nonprofit groups could use the tax credit as an incentive for donors to increase the amount of their contributions.
