OTTUMWA, IOWA -- Many of our Facebook fans wanted to know if employers are checking social media sites to assist in background checks on potential employees.
KTVO went to the Ottumwa City Hall to see if the city uses these practices.
"There are some arguments whether that invades a person's privacy or not; and the courts aren't real clear yet on what the answer to that question is, but it does invade a individual's privacy," said Joni Keith, the attorney for the City of Ottumwa.
"We do a background check, but we don't go as far as, at least at this point and time, we don't go as far as getting onto Facebook and Twitter and those types of
social networking sites."
Keith also told KTVO that employers run the risk of seeing fake profiles, meaning the person on the site is actually not the same person applying for the job.
Always remember, what one puts online, stays online, even if it is deleted. Social networking sites keep copies of everything published on their sites for their records.
