KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- The building that housed a downtown business owned by a former kirksville mayor is being sold on the courthouse steps on Monday, October 3 at 1:30 p.m.
The il Spazio Brewery, Pub and Restaurant building has gone into foreclosure.
Co-owner Jeff Newton and his partner opened the business in the fall of 2003.
Newton told KTVO it was doing well until the economic downturn hit in 2007.
That caused sales to drop off by about 30 percent.
They eventually decided to close il Spazio at the end of 2008.
That's when Steve Collins of Kirksville entered into a lease-purchase agreement and continued to operate the business for a year-and-a-half until he was forced to close in mid-2010.
Newton said he enjoyed his time in Kirksville very much.
"I appreciated all the people that made il Spazio a success for the time it was successful, all the patrons and the people that worked for us as well. And, I enjoyed the actual town. It's one of those things I wish it would have turned out differently, but there are a lot of people out in the world right now thinking the same thing," said Newton.
After having the il Spazio building on the market for several months with no buyer, Newton said the Bank of Kirksville eventually foreclosed on it.
That building just off the Kirksville square will be auctioned off on the courthouse steps on October 3 at 1:30 pm.
