NOVINGER, MO. -- Meet 17 year old Rachel Frost of Novinger. She has been involved with raising hogs and sheep for the past 9 years. Sheep though has been running through her blood since she was a kid. Her grandmother owned a sheep farm while her mom and aunts raised and showed them. Eventually the interest got down to her.

“My grandma really loved them. It just stuck to me. I’ve been around them since I was born so I just kept going. They’re fun, but not the easiest to take care of. You have to work with them a lot, but they’re ok. I like showing them.”

As part of her 4-H project Rachel showed sheep and has won awards such as Grand Champion, 1st Place, Champion Breed, and Showmanship at fairs all across The Heartland.

“I’ve showed at our NEMO Fair in Kirksville also at the Sullivan County Fair in Milan. I’ve showed at Putnam County Fair in Unionville and The Missouri State Fair a bunch.”

Rachel says raising sheep takes a lot of responsibility and patience.

“You have to work with them everyday and walk them too. Then once you start getting use to them, they get use to you and it gets easier. You have to feed them twice a day and give them water. Also just play with them and become their friend.”

Other than her sheep, Rachel has other hobbies like playing sports and being highly involved in after school organizations and clubs. She is a junior at Adair County R-1. She wants to continue with agriculture.

“I just go in the ring every show and hope to get something good out of it in the end.”

After high school, Rachel plans on going to Northwest in Maryville for college. She also wants to continue passing the family torch of sheep raising and showing to her own kids.

Congratulations Rachel on being this week’s Ag Kid.
