KIRKSVILLE, MO --
What could have been an extremely dangerous situation for a Kirksville student last week has transportation personnel looking at the bus safety policy.
A Kirksville Primary student fell asleep on the bus on the way to school and ended up in Novinger where the bus driver lives.
The student was later found walking near Highway 6 in Novinger and picked up by a passerby.
The student was later picked up by a parent at the Novinger School.
Shannon Weber, owner of Weber Bus Company says the driver has been suspended indefinitely.
\Weber says the company bus policy already called for the drivers to check the bus for students after completing each route, something that is strongly being reinforced to the drivers after this incident.
They're also encouraging the bus drivers to check the bus when it is safe and convenient before even leaving the school grounds.
All of the buses except for those used for athletic trips have a child checkmate alarm system. That forces drivers to walk to the back of the bus and push a button to turn the alarm off when the bus is turned off.
Weber says it isn't foolproof, but the driver's should be checking for students when they go to the back of the bus at the end of a route.
The suspended driver's name has not been released.
