OTTUMWA, IOWA -- As the 2011 Labor Day festivities came to an end, dogs in Ottumwa got a chance to take a swim at the Beach Ottumwa.

Sept. 5 was the last day the water park was open for the season, and before closing its doors, from 6 to 8 p.m., dogs got to take a swim in the wave pool as part of the Heartland Humane Society's 5th annual Dog Paddle.

Some of the dogs loved the water and swam to the deep end. Others went in the water and ran right out.

There was one three legged dog that could not get enough of the water, and then a couple of shelter dogs that were also splashing around in the water.

Those who brought their dogs said the chillier evening temperatures couldn't stop them from swimming with their pets.

"It's for a good cause and they've never played in the water before so it was a good chance to see how they'd take to it and they loved it," said Travis Case, of Ottumwa.

The Heartland Humane Society took home a truck load of dog and cat food donated by the people in attendance.

And for inquiring minds, the Beach Ottumwa staff said the water will be dumped after the event.
