OTTUMWA, IOWA -- For Tuesday’s Facebook Story of the Day, our fans wanted to know; what are the rules and regulations for teenagers to have a driver’s license in the State of Iowa.
According to the Iowa Department of Transportation, a new set of guidelines went into effect in 1999 that created three driver’s categories for teenagers. The first category is called, instructional permit. To obtain a permit, teenagers 14 years and older must have written consent from a parent or guardian and complete 20 hours of supervised training. Additional training is needed, which could be completed through a driver’s education program.
The second category is called, intermediate license. Teenagers from the age of 16 and older may get this license, but must complete all the qualifications of having an instructor’s permit. The teenager must have this license for a minimum of 12 months and may drive without supervision during certain times of the day. Training is required, which could be completed through a driver’s education program.
The final category is a full license. To hold this license, the teenager must be 17 years old and meet all the conditions of an intermediate license. The driver would have full privileges, but if they have restrictions on their license, they could not be allowed to operate a vehicle during certain hours.
