KEOKUK, IOWA -- We have good news to report in the story of “Tar Dog”, the 15 pound Beagle-Dachshund mix that was rescued from a tar pit in Keokuk, Iowa last month.
A passerby heard the dog’s cry on July 25 and reported it to authorities.
Rescuers used boards positioned underneath the dog to pry him from the tar. The dog was then taken to a local vet where he was cleaned and treated.
Jean Meyer, of Keokuk Animal Services, said only one side of the dog's face was above the tar, which had liquefied in the summer heat.
The little dog now has a new lease on life.
Mary Dyroff from Lone Tree, Iowa heard his story on TV and contacted Keokuk Animal Services.
Dyroff says it was love at first sight. Mary and her husband adopted the dog known as 'Tar Dog' and renamed him Remus.
She says Remus is healthy and beautiful. Dyroff says he fits in well with her family and her four other dogs.
Recently Remus went to the vet for shots and got an ear cleaning too. The veterinarian found some remnants of tar that got into the hard to reach ear area.
