ALBIA, IOWA -- Residents of Albia celebrated its historic architecture Aug. 25-27 during their annual "Albia Restoration Days" celebration.
The celebration included an hour long parade through the center of Albia to the square, along with an art and quilt show.
Then, gymnasts from the Chicago Boyz Acrobatic Team performed.
The celebration started back in the 70s and 80s when the community started a campaign to restore all of its historic buildings in the town's square. Those buildings are apart of the 90 in Albia that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Many say the festival is a source of pride for the community.
"It's kind of a reminder that in small town Iowa, you can restore communities and still have a community," said Matthew Foster, a former Albia Restoration Days Chairperson. "The lights are still on and we're maintaining our culture and pride and particularly our historic buildings. "
Most of the festival concluded Saturday with an evening Follies show. But for those who like history, on Sunday, Aug. 28, the Monroe County Historical Society will be leading tours of Buxton at 1 pm. Buxton is an old integrated coal mining town that existed in the early 1900s and was located just north of Albia.
