KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- Did you know that more than 14 million Americans are unemployed; over 25 thousand of them are Missourians.
That’s where the Missouri Career Center inside Moberly Area Community College in Kirksville comes into place.
The center provides services and training for area residents in need of a job.
“Our services provide resume building, we help them write a resume up making sure there are no misspellings and making sure it looks good,” said Cindy Higgins the Functional Leader at Missouri Career Center.
Funding for these programs continue to decrease while unemployment continues to increase.
“Funding at the Workforce Investment Board comes through the Workforce Investment Act of 1998 and that is up for renewal,” said Gordon Ipson, Vice Chair of the NEMO Workforce Investment Board. “If that funding runs out, then these programs have to sop and so what we're hoping to do is by the end of this week draw attention to the need to continue that funding for the future.”
The NEMO Workforce Investment Board has been hard at work this week during the National Workforce Week of Action, getting the word out that funding for these programs are vital.
“National week is to draw attention to the fact that our Workforce Investment programs and training programs that are so vital to getting our people back to work and we can’t afford to lose funding for these programs, especially during times like these where we’re facing high unemployment rates and under-employment rates,” Ipson said.
Last year over 17 thousand job seekers were served through the local workforce development program; 65% of them found jobs.
“We’re unique and nobody else has the services that we offer that help the employees find jobs,” Higgins said.
